What you need to know:

  • Effective close of business Thursday, September 30, 2010, NASDAQ OMX will cease to support the NASDAQ Index Dissemination Service (NIDS) data formats.
    • NIDS is a legacy direct data feed product that carries intra-day valuation information for indexes and exchange-traded funds (ETF) listed on The NASDAQ Stock Market only.
    • NIDS is being replaced by the NASDAQ OMX Global Index Dissemination Service (GIDS). GIDS, which was introduced in November 2008, carries intra-day valuation information for the full range of NASDAQ OMX indexes in both the U.S. and Europe.
  • To ensure that firms have uninterrupted access to NASDAQ index data, NASDAQ OMX is advising all NIDS direct data feed subscribers to migrate to the GIDS data feed on or before Friday, October 1, 2010.

What is NASDAQ Index Dissemination Service (NIDS)?

NASDAQ Index Dissemination ServiceSM (NIDSSM) is a direct data feed product offered by NASDAQ OMX Information LLC. Introduced in 2003, the NIDS data feed carries intra-day valuation for the 74 indexes and 41 exchange-traded funds licensed through The NASDAQ Stock Market®. Because it was created prior to the mergers, the NIDS product does not carry any index data for the NASDAQ OMX PHLXSM (PHLX®) or NASDAQ OMX Nordic markets.

What is the NASDAQ OMX Global Index Data Service (GIDS)?

Introduced in 2008, the NASDAQ OMX Global Index Data ServiceSM (GIDSSM) is a direct data feed offering that provides firms access to all NASDAQ OMX global index and derivative product valuation data in a single outbound data stream. This premier service consolidates NASDAQ OMX indexes and ETF valuation data, as well as third party partner data offering real-time updates, daily summary messages and access to some of the most widely followed indexes and ETFs in the world.

As of February 1, 2010, the GIDS data feed supported more than 870 indexes from the NASDAQ OMX markets as well as data for third-party index providers.

How does GIDS differ from NIDS?

The GIDS product offers greater market coverage and market transparency than the NIDS data feed. In addition to data for PHLX, NASDAQ OMX Nordic Exchange and NASDAQ OMX Baltic Exchange, GIDS also carries one-second updates for many of the NASDAQ indexes. At the data format level, GIDS supports a standalone settlement value and end-of-day summary messages for NASDAQ OMX index products.

As outlined in the data feed interface specification, the GIDS data stream includes the following data elements:

  • For Indexes:
    • Intraday net asset values
    • Settlement values
    • Currency Spot values for select instruments
    • Daily security components data
    • End-of-Day Summary data
  • For ETFs:
    • Intraday portfolio values (IPVs)
    • Daily valuation information – such as the Net Asset Value per Share, the Estimated Cash per Share (also known as Net Accrued Dividend per Share), the Estimated Cash per Creation Unit, the Total Cash per Creation Unit and the Total Shares Outstanding of the fund
    • ETF Directory message designed to provide the symbols of the ETF valuations

When is NASDAQ OMX retiring the NIDS data formats?

NASDAQ OMX® continues to leverage its global synergies in order to streamline delivery strategies. As part of an ongoing effort to centralize the US distribution of index and derivative product valuation data, effective close of business on Thursday, September 30, 2010, NASDAQ OMX will retire the legacy NIDS data formats.
